Seodaemun Prison
Seodaemun prison was one of numerous Japanese POW camps thoughout not only Korea, but thoughout all of Asia. This, I believe, is the largest one in Korea. It was used to inprison and often execute and/or torture Koreans who were against the Japanese takeover of Korea. I imagine the feeling that this place gave me would not be so much different than that of a Nazi war camp. History shows that the Japanese certainly could be every bit as horrible as the Nazis were.
Here's the front gate.
One of the wings of the prison.
Another wing.
Each wing had two floors of small cells.
Dead bodies were carried from the camp, though this tunnel, and into a cemetery.
That's me.
A door to one of the many cells.
Were food rations slipped though here?
This is the same slot, as viewed from the inside of the cell.
Here's another view of the inside of a cell. There's a lot of graffiti on the walls.
Here's a close up of the graffiti. Most of it was in Korean, with some English and Japanese as well. Most of it says things like, "Fuck Japan", "Japan is evil", etc. After seeing this place, I understand much better why Koreans generally hate the Japanese.
A view down the inside of one of the wings.
Somewhere in the prison...
Here's somewhere else...
I found a website that talks a little more about this place here: http://www.lifeinkorea.com/Travel2/seoul/322
