Korean department stores: Part 1: Homeplus/Tesco

Malls are few and far between in Korea (and in Japan for that matter). Other than a few covered, air conditioned/heated, converted street malls outside and the underground malls that connect the varous subway stations around Korea cities, there are no conventional shopping malls. Instead, there are giant department stores. These are generally multi-floored shopping castles with every section imaginable. It's your all-in-one pet, automotive accessory, hardware, electronics, furniture and applicance, bedding, drapery, music, jewlery, toy, clothes, liquer and beer, food court, movie theatre and grocery store. I'm sure that I forgot a few things in there. They can be anywhere from two floors to somewhere around a dozen floors. They come in many brands, including Wal-Mart, Costco (American), Hyundai Deptartment Store (Korean), Lotte Department Store (Korean), Carrefour (French) and Homeplus/Tesco (British). There are probably others.

A shot of Homeplus.

They're slashing prices!

Lots of good stuff here.

Get your milk here. Unfortunately, good cheese is hard to come buy. You can find cheese slices and shedded cheese at most places, but it's fairly expensive.

Oh ya.

Kimbap. Also known as sushi rolls/california rolls, etc.

This is known as the bakery section.

This is how you move between floors.

...and so Michael Jackson heard that little boys pants were half off...

Get bedding here.

Appliances.

Computers. Surprisingly, I think the deals in North America are slightly better.

Toys!!!

Children's books.

Guitars, keyboards and the like.

Video games!

The checkout!

Hey just be glad that you guys have shopping centers now! When I lived there 5 years age (pre-world cup) we had to go to Pusan to get anything good :)

Great blog by the way...I love staying in the Ulsan loop. Thanks :)

Hey, thanks a lot Barb! I appreciate that.

The funny part is that everyone of my department store pictures are from Pusan. :) I guess I just tend to carry my camera with me more when I'm travelling. Don't we all?
